With a legacy of over 150 years, The American Institute of Architects (AIA), is a professional association dedicated to representing and serving architects and design professionals. With more than 98,000 members, the AIA is the voice of the architectural profession and a resource for its members in service to society.
The AIA is a tripartite federated organization meaning you have access and membership to three points of entry into the organization. Every member belongs to the local, state, and national levels of the Institute. No matter where you live, the AIA strives to respond to your professional needs and the public you serve, and offers a wide variety of services, benefits, and resources to our members.

AIA New York State
In the late 1920s, the need for a unified New York State Association of Architects became evident, particularly during the introduction of housing legislation in Albany in 1928 and 1929. At that time, the architectural organizations in the state lacked coordination, presenting themselves individually in legislative matters. This disjointed approach, with various representatives and conflicting messages, resulted in views that held little influence in Albany, leading to a breakdown in the housing program during those two crucial years. Recognizing the necessity for collaboration, The Council of Registered Architects—State of New York was officially established and incorporated in 1931. The primary purpose of this Council was to coordinate the legislative efforts of different chapters and societies across the state. From then on, the Council represented the entire architectural profession in New York State.
The mission of the American Institute of Architects New York State (AIANYS) is to represent architects and the profession in government while providing essential services. Initiated by architects recognizing the need for representation, AIANYS ensures a collective voice through its Board of Directors, overseeing operational aspects. Founded by Richard Upjohn in New York, the AIA is committed to advancing the scientific and practical perfection of its members and elevating the standing of the architectural profession.
AIA New York State is committed to helping architects meet today’s challenges by:

- Providing an increasingly robust platform for members to recognize and participate in AIA New York State activities, events, and initiatives
- Promoting design excellence through knowledge development, delivery, dissemination, and environmental stewardship
- Serving as the collective voice of architects and the architecture profession to community, public, and legislative audiences
- Exhibiting and practicing business approaches and operational processes that are models of organizational excellence
