Many design firms face challenges in tracking project workload, budgets, and staffing. The difficulty often lies in understanding both the overall workload and the specifics of each project. To address these issues, firms frequently turn to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for better information. However, traditional ERPs can be rigid and may not effectively manage the unique demands of design projects. No single software package can address all aspects of these challenges.

This seminar explores common issues with ERP software and proposes that firms view operations management as an ecosystem of various software tools, an ecosystem where “reporting” is the critical focus. Project management and operations is best understood as a data ecosystem, where a constellation of simple data tools can significantly enhance efficiency. These tools can be categorized into three distinct groups. The presentation will outline these three categories and showcase examples of software that firms can use to build a customized project information ecosystem.
